Gold Price Today: Interactive Chart and History
The price of one troy ounce of gold in US dollars, updated daily, with history back to 2000. This is the wholesale market number that everything else keys off; what any dealer quotes you for coins or bars will sit above it, and understanding that gap matters more than watching the wiggles.
History seeded from COMEX gold futures front-month closing prices; extended forward each day with the spot price from gold-api.com. Values are indicative wholesale prices, not dealer quotes.
How to read this number
Three prices get called "the gold price," and they differ:
- Spot: the wholesale price for immediate delivery, the number above.
- Futures: exchange contracts for later delivery, usually within a fraction of a percent of spot. Our pre-2026 history uses front-month futures closes, which is why old-date values may differ a hair from other charts.
- Retail: what you actually pay for a coin or bar: spot plus a premium for minting and dealer margin, and when you sell back, spot minus the dealer's cut. That round trip, the spread, is the real cost of owning physical gold, and it is the least advertised number in the industry.
If you are evaluating a gold IRA, the chart is context, not a verdict. The rules in our IRS rules decoder and the fee layers described there determine what an account actually costs; the price determines what the metal inside it is worth on a given day. For year-by-year figures back to 2000, see the price history table.

Frequently asked questions
How often does this chart update?
Once per day. The page fetches the current spot price from a free public feed (gold-api.com) the first time it is viewed each day and stores it; if the feed is ever unavailable, the chart simply shows data through the most recent stored date, which is stamped under the price.
Why does this differ slightly from another site's gold chart?
Sources differ: LBMA auction prices, COMEX futures, and streaming spot quotes are all legitimate references that sit within a fraction of a percent of each other. Our history uses futures closes and our daily updates use spot, both labeled under the chart.
Is the gold price a reason to open a gold IRA?
That is a decision we do not make for you, and past prices are not a projection of anything. What we can say: the account rules, fees, and spreads are knowable in advance, and they matter regardless of where the price goes. Start with the rules and the fee layers before the price chart.
What was gold worth 10 or 20 years ago?
Use the 10Y and Max buttons above; the chart runs back to 2000. Hover any point for the exact figure on that date.
