Reading a quarter century of gold in four sentences

Gold entered the 2000s under $300 after a two-decade bear market, then rose for eleven of the next twelve years through the financial crisis era, peaking in 2011. It then fell roughly a third by 2015 and spent years consolidating, a stretch worth remembering whenever the metal is described as only going up. A second long advance followed, with 2020 and the mid-2020s producing new records. The table gives you each step without the narrative gloss, and the interactive chart shows the shape between the rows.

Frequently asked questions

What was the highest gold price ever?

The highest recorded close in our dataset appears in the table's High column for the relevant year, updated daily. Nominal records cluster in the mid-2020s; adjusted for inflation, the 1980 spike still competes, which is a reminder that "record high" claims need a stated basis.

Why do other sites show slightly different numbers for the same year?

Different references: LBMA auction prices, COMEX futures closes, and streaming spot quotes each differ by fractions of a percent, and intraday versus closing basis differs more. Our history uses futures closes seeded from exchange data and spot for recent daily updates, both disclosed on the chart page.

Can I get this data for a specific month?

The interactive chart covers that: pick the 1Y, 5Y, 10Y, or Max range and hover any point for the exact date and price. This page keeps the yearly summary; the chart holds the fine grain.

Does gold always go up over 10 years?

No. The table shows multi-year drawdowns, including roughly a third of its value from the 2011 peak to 2015. Long stretches up and long stretches down both live in this data, which is exactly why we publish all of it.
