Three contractors will quote three different system sizes at three different prices, and the paperwork is written so that comparing them is genuinely hard. This tool converts each bid to cost per ton, the number that makes them comparable, and flags the two things most likely to be wrong with a cheap quote: equipment below your region's legal minimum efficiency, and a labor warranty that does not exist.

Cost per ton (total price divided by system size) is what puts differently sized bids on equal footing, the same way price per watt does for solar. The efficiency check uses the federal minimum for a new split-system central air conditioner: 13.4 SEER2 in the northern region and 14.3 SEER2 in the southern and southwestern regions. Why cost per ton is the number to compare
A $9,000 bid and an $11,500 bid tell you nothing until you know what each one installs. A ton is a unit of cooling capacity, and dividing the total price by the tonnage strips out the size difference so you can see which contractor is actually charging more for the same work. It is the HVAC equivalent of price per watt in solar.
What it does not capture is scope, and that is where bids really diverge. Before you trust the comparison, confirm each quote covers the same work: new lineset or reused, ductwork repaired or left alone, permits pulled, electrical upgrades, thermostat, and haul-away of the old equipment. A bid that looks cheap per ton is often cheap because something on that list is missing.
What the flags mean
- Below the SEER2 minimum: federal standards set a floor for new split-system central air conditioners, 13.4 SEER2 in the northern region and 14.3 SEER2 in the southern and southwestern regions. How many HVAC quotes should I get?
Three is the usual advice and it holds up here, because it reveals the real price range for your home and exposes any single bid that is padded or unusually thin. Two bids only tell you which is cheaper, not whether either is reasonable.
