An HVAC job is priced locally, not off a national price tag. What you pay to replace a furnace, air conditioner, or heat pump depends on the system type and its size (measured in tons or BTUs), the efficiency rating (SEER2 and AFUE), whether the ductwork needs work, and, more than anything, local labor rates and your climate. A 3-ton system that runs one price in a mild market costs more where summers are brutal and the load calculation pushes you to a larger unit.
Our guides break down where the money actually goes on an HVAC project, how to size a system so you are not oversold, and how to tell a repair from a replacement, with cost pages built for individual cities so the numbers reflect your area rather than a national average. We are an independent guide: we do not sell, install, or service equipment.
Our Methodology
Our HVAC cost estimates are built from published contractor cost data, manufacturer equipment specifications, and regional labor differences, then adjusted by city. Sizing guidance follows the standard load and square-footage rules of thumb, with the clear caveat that a proper Manual J load calculation from a licensed contractor is what should size the final system.
We are independent and do not sell, install, or repair HVAC equipment, so nothing here is a sales pitch for a brand or a contractor. Where a figure is a range or a rule of thumb rather than a firm quote, we say so.
