IRS Transcript Code 977: Amended Return Posted

977

Your amended return posted and is in the processing queue.

The official definition, IRS Document 6209

Posted Amended Return (generated transaction). Identifies an input return which contained Condition Code G (Amended), or an IMF 1040-X.

What it means for your refund

An amended return runs on its own slower track. The IRS says a Form 1040-X can take up to about 20 weeks to process, and any additional refund from it posts later as its own 846, separate from your original refund.

The folklore, corrected

Myth: Code 977 means my amended return is finished.

977 means the amended return POSTED and entered the queue, not that it is done. Processing continues after it, and the Where's My Amended Return tool tracks the status through received, adjusted, and completed.

Worth knowing: A 977 is usually followed later by an adjustment code, such as a 290 or 291, when the IRS actually works the amendment. Until then the amended figures are logged, not yet reflected in your balance.

Reading the transcript around it

Codes rarely act alone: holds (570, 810) pair with releases (571, 811), a 971 often flags the letter that explains a hold, and the refund itself is always the 846 line. The full code index maps the neighbors, including the cycle code and As-of date explained without the folklore. If the account shows a balance rather than a refund, the letters that follow are decoded in our IRS notice decoder.
