IRS Transcript Code 766: Refundable Credit Allowance
A refundable credit the IRS allowed on your account, such as the additional child tax credit or a stimulus-type credit. In one special case it instead reverses an offset.
The official definition, IRS Document 6209
Generated Refundable Credit Allowance; also, with an offset trace number, IRS TOP Offset Reversal (reverses a prior TC 898 with the same OTN).
What it means for your refund
Positive input: 766 amounts add to what can come back to you. The offset-reversal flavor actually restores refund money a Treasury offset had taken.
Reading the transcript around it
Codes rarely act alone: holds (570, 810) pair with releases (571, 811), a 971 often flags the letter that explains a hold, and the refund itself is always the 846 line. The full code index maps the neighbors, including the cycle code and As-of date explained without the folklore. If the account shows a balance rather than a refund, the letters that follow are decoded in our IRS notice decoder.
