IRS Transcript Code 530: Currently Not Collectible

530

The IRS marked the balance as not collectible for now, the hardship status decoded in our CNC guide.

The official definition, IRS Document 6209

Currently not Collectible Account. A balance due account is considered currently not collectible.

What it means for your refund

Currently not collectible pauses active collection like levies, but it is not forgiveness and it does not free your refund. While an account is in CNC, the IRS still keeps and applies your refunds to the balance, penalties and interest keep accruing, and the collection statute keeps running.

The folklore, corrected

Myth: Code 530 means my tax debt was written off.

Currently not collectible is a temporary hardship status, not cancellation. The balance stays, interest and penalties continue, refunds are still applied to it, and the IRS can review your finances again and resume collection once the hardship eases.

Worth knowing: CNC and an offer in compromise are different tools: CNC pauses collection, an offer settles the debt for less. If the hardship looks long term, it is worth weighing the two.

Reading the transcript around it

Codes rarely act alone: holds (570, 810) pair with releases (571, 811), a 971 often flags the letter that explains a hold, and the refund itself is always the 846 line. The full code index maps the neighbors, including the cycle code and As-of date explained without the folklore. If the account shows a balance rather than a refund, the letters that follow are decoded in our IRS notice decoder.
