CP12: The IRS Fixed Your Math and Repriced Your Refund

A CP12 notice means the IRS corrected one or more mistakes on your tax return, and as a result you are either due a refund or your original refund amount changed. If you agree, no response is required and the refund check should arrive in 4 to 6 weeks, provided you owe no other debts the IRS must collect. If you disagree, contact the IRS by the date shown on the notice, because rights expire with it.

General information, not tax or legal advice. Deadlines and dollar figures below reflect what the IRS publishes and can change; the controlling dates are the ones printed on your own notice. ClearChoiceRadar is not affiliated with the IRS or any government agency.

  4. If unpaidA balance due rolls into collection notices

Agree or disagree: the two lanes

You agree with the correction

Do nothing. The IRS says no response is required, and a refund should arrive within 4 to 6 weeks unless it is offset against other debts. Update your own copy of the return so next year starts from the right numbers.

You disagree

Contact the IRS at the number on the notice by the date indicated. Miss that date and, in the IRS's words, you lose formal rights to have the changes reversed and the right to appeal to the U.S. Tax Court, though the IRS may still consider late documentation and reverse a change if it agrees.

Precision note

The deadline is the date on YOUR notice

Many sites quote a flat 60 day window for math error disputes. The IRS's current CP12 page states no day count; it says to respond by the date shown on the notice. Use the printed date, not internet arithmetic.

If the case goes further

If your disagreement is forwarded for examination, the IRS says audit staff will contact you within 6 weeks to explain the process and your rights. That contact, not the CP12, is where an audit would begin.

CP12 questions

How long until the CP12 refund arrives?

The IRS says 4 to 6 weeks from the notice, as long as you do not owe other tax or debts the IRS is required to collect, which would offset it.

How long do I have to dispute a CP12?

Until the date shown on your notice. The current IRS page states no universal day count, and it warns that after that date you lose the formal right to reversal and to a Tax Court appeal, though late documentation may still be considered.

Does a CP12 mean I did something wrong?

It means the IRS's processing found what it considers a mistake, often arithmetic or a credit computation, and fixed it. Corrections can go in your favor; a CP12 by definition changed a refund, not created a penalty.
